Win a One-Off 2002 Yamaha YZ250

Yamaha YZ250 – Ben Townley VMXdN Race Bike

DocWob has teamed up once again with Only Comps, this time offering the chance to win a 2002 Yamaha YZ250 Ben Townley VMXdN race bike, built in-house at DocWob for 2025 competition use.

This is a purpose-built race bike, not a display build. Every major component has been rebuilt, upgraded or replaced to create a VMXdN ready machine finished to factory race standards.

Built Around a Strengthened 2002 YZ250 Chassis

The build starts with a 2002 YZ250 frame that has been prepared specifically for racing. Steering stops have been strengthened, peg mounts gusseted, and brackets added for a bolt-on skid plate. The frame was then powder coated black.

A hand-made DocWob 3mm aluminium skid plate is fitted, along with a subframe that has had the anodising stripped, hand polished, and lowered by 5mm.

All swingarm, linkage and steering bearings are new. The swingarm itself has had the anodising stripped and has been hand polished to a cast/brushed finish.

Fully Rebuilt YZ250 Motor

The engine has been rebuilt in-house at DocWob. Work includes a new rod, main bearings, piston, gaskets and seals, along with a new clutch basket, clutch hub, pressure plate, springs and plates. All transmission bearings were replaced, with new transmission gears fitted where required.

The ignition cover is new, and the engine is finished in dark grey Cerakote. A sand-cast magnesium clutch case has also been Cerakoted dark grey by Ceramix.

Boyesen reeds are fitted, along with a 38mm Keihin carburettor using a DocWob hose kit. Jetting is set as follows: main 178, pilot 48, needle N3EW (clip 2), slide 7, airscrew 3/4 turn out. A DT1 air filter is used.

Exhaust is handled by a Pro Circuit works-finish pipe and Pro Circuit R304 silencer.

Suspension, Wheels and Brakes

The bike runs YZF 48mm SSS forks, revalved and serviced in-house at DocWob, with upper tubes anodised Kashima gold and Cerakoted black fork feet. Correct springs are fitted for Ben Townley.

The rear shock features a ceramic-coated body, silver spring, DocWob billet lock rings, and is valved in-house to Ben Townley’s spring weight.

Wheels are built with gold Excel rims, new spokes, Cerakoted hubs, and all new bearings and seals. Tyres are a new Dunlop MX34 front and Dunlop MX12 rear.

Braking includes a Brembo 270mm oversize floating front disc and 245mm rear disc, both with billet carriers. YZF-fitment brakes are used with DocWob billet caps. A Cycra oversize front disc guard is fitted in white.

Controls, Finish and Details

An XFUN aluminium “low boy” tank is finished to DocWob factory spec, with two vents to transmit clean air to the airbox, a flush-fit gas cap, and the tank lowered 15mm to flatten the seat position. The seat uses a Guts red gripper cover with red ribs, Guts firm foam and Guts base.

Plastics are XFUN white, finished with Evo MX custom graphics in official Yamaha 70th anniversary specification.

Ride Engineering 23mm offset triple clamps (Star Yamaha spec) are fitted in silver, with DocWob oversize billet bar mounts, Renthal 999 Twinwall bars in black, Renthal mid half-waffle grips, and a Renthal cloth bar pad in red, white and black.

Controls include an RFX billet clutch perch with sandblasted lever for grip, matching front brake lever, new stock Yamaha gear lever and rear brake pedal, and YZF-fitment footpegs with 11mm pins.

A half-vented Cycra front plate (now discontinued) has been hand cut to fit.

Full DocWob titanium fasteners are used throughout. All lubricants are Syntol, as recommended, with Renegade MX2 fuel specified.
